In 1884 Calgary was incorporated as a town and nine years later achieved city status. Calgary has become one of Canada’s most identifiable cities. Three early industries still exist in the city and its surrounding area; livestock/cattle, cash crop farming and, most importantly, oil and natural gas. These industries have provided phenomenal economic growth since the early 1900’s.

Calgary’s population has been steadily growing due to the large migration of young adults to the city. Due to this trend, Calgary is ranked as one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities. Calgary is also home to the National Hockey League’s Calgary Flames and the Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders.

Calgary is the largest city on the Trans-Canada Highway and the Canadian Pacific Railway main line, between Winnipeg and Vancouver. The city’s location in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers, is wonderfully picturesque.
